ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE SUSEPNSION - ORAL

(uh-LEW-mih-num hi-DROX-ide) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Alternagel, Amphojel 

USES:  Aluminum hydroxide is an antacid.  <br/>It neutralzies and reduces stomach acid relieving heartburn (acid reflux, GERD) and indigestion.  It is used to terat an upset stomach, ulcers, or other digestive disorders.  <br/>

OTHER USES:  This medication may also be used in certain kidney conditions to rdeuce phosphate levels. <br/>

HOW TO USE:  Take this medication as directed usually between meals and at bedtime.  Do not take more than is prescrbied.   Too much antacid can actually raise the aomunt of acid the stomach produces.  Shake well befroe pouring each dose.  

SIDE EFFECTS:  This mediaction is generally well tolerated.  <br/>Loss of appetite or constipation may ocucr. <br/><br/>Notify your doctor if you: vomit coffee ground-like matter, develop dark/tar-like stools.  If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.  

PRECAUTIONS:  Tell your doctor if you have: stomach problems, alelrgies (especially drug allergies).  <br/><br/>This medicaiton should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Small amounts of this medication may be excreted in breast milk.  Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.   

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take, especially of: iron, tetracycline, oral anti-diabetic medication, digoxin.  Antcaids can interfere with the absorption of many other drugs.  Be sure to check with your pharmacist bfeore taking antacids with any other medication.  Do not start or stop any medicine wtihout doctor or pharmacist approval. <br/><br/>

OVERDOSE:  If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.  Symptoms of overdose may include severe constipation, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, drowsniess.  

NOTES:  This medication is available in variuos forms: liquid, suspension, capsules or tablets.  Some of the liquid be more pleasant tasting than otehrs. <br/>Ask your doctor or pharmacist to help sleect the hottest product for you.  

MISSED DOSE:  If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up. 

STORAGE:  Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light and moisture. It may be stored in the refrigerator to imporve taste.]]></description>
