ALUMINUM HYDROXIDE SUSPENSION - ORAL
(uh-LEW-mih-num hi-DROX-ide)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Alternagel, Amphojel
USES: Aluminum hydroxide is an antacid.
It neutralizes and reduces stomach acid relieving heartburn (acid reflux, GERD) and indgiestion. It is used to treat an upset stomach, ulcers, or other digestive disorders.
OTHER USES: This medication may also be used in certain kidney conditions to redcue phosphate levels.
HOW TO USE: Take this medication as directed usually between meals and at bedtime.
Do not take more than is prescribed.
Too much antacid can actually rasie the amount of acid the stomach produces. Shake well before pouring each dose.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally well toelrated.
Loss of appetite or contsipation may occur.
Notify your dcotor if you: vomit coffee ground-like matter, develop dark/tar-like stools.
If you noitce other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: sotmach problems, allergies (especially drug allergies). This medication should be used only if clearly needed duirng pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Small amoutns of this medication may be excreted in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prsecription medication you may take, especially of: iron, tetracycline, oral anti-diabetic medication, digoxin. Antacids can interfree with the absorption of many other drugs. Be sure to check with your pharmacist before tkaing antacids with any other medication.
Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include severe constipation, dizziness, fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, drowsiness.
NOTES: This medication is available in various forms: liquid, suspension, capsules or tablets.
Some of the lqiuid be more pleasant tasting than others.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist to help select the hottest product for you.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usaul dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degeres F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat, light and moisture.
It may be stroed in the refrigerator to improve taste.
